California community college plans groundbreaking this fall for 2 construction projects
College of the Desert, a community college based in Palm Desert, California, is scheduled to begin construction this fall on two facilities — an automotive technology training center in Cathedral City and a new campus in Palm Springs.
The Desert Sun reports that the college will break ground on Oct. 16 on Roadrunner Motors, a 25,983-square-foot automotive technology training center. Construction of the $37.8 million facility in Cathedral City is expected to be completed in 2026.
The groundbreaking for the college's Palm Springs campus is set for Nov. 14, on the site of what had been the Palm Springs Mall. The colllege bought the property, which had been mostly abandoned since 2005, for $22 million in 2018.
Environmental and architectural approvals were secured earlier this summer, and construction on the $405 million project is expected to begin soon.
The Palm Springs campus and other projects are funded by two voter-approved bond measures that together authorized around $924.3 million in spending.
