The $134 million building will be about 10,000 square feet larger than the existing facility, reports The Newark Post.
School officials say the existing building has a small cafeteria, cramped hallways and small classrooms.
The school was built in 1974 and was intended to serve as a half-day vocational program for Newark High School. The facility was never intended to be a full-time school.
The new building will be constructed next to the existing one on what is now athletic fields. Once the new building is complete, the old one will be razed and new athletic facilities will be built.
The state will fund about 62% of the cost, and the district will fund the rest by issuing bonds.
