The second campus of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics will immerse students in a rural living/learning model.

North Carolina has opened a second campus of a school focused on math and science.

The Morganton, N.C., location of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics was built on the former site of the North Carolina School for the Deaf and has about 60-plus acres.

Students will be immersed in a rural living/learning model that extends the school's existing urban campus in Durham.

The school was founded in 1981 as the nation’s first public residential high school for science, technology, engineering and math  according to a news release from Duda | Paine Architects.

The Morganton campus has three new buildings: a student commons, residence hall, and a wellness and activity center.

The campus also has a 450-seat multipurpose venue in a converted cattle barn. Other existing structures serve administration, facilities and classroom functions.
