The 100,000-square-foot school will rise on a 17,000-square-foot lot that is owned by the university, reports Washington Square News.
The university had planned to use the site as part of a campus expansion, but the lot is no longer part of the NYU expansion plan, NYU has agreed to turn the land over to the city for the school project.
The construction will displace asupermarket that has been leasing the site from NYU. No plans have been made for relocating the store.
The new school has the support of NYU and many local public officials, but opponents of the project say the campus will result in residents of the Greenwich Village neighborhood having fewer grocery store options.
