Texas Tech University has broken ground on a $100 million Academic Sciences Building on its Lubbock campus.

The 125,000-square-foot facility, which will be adjacent to the existing Chemistry and Science buildings, will house teaching and laboratory space for five departments within the College of Arts & Sciences, reports the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

Building features include hands-on active learning classrooms, student collaboration spaces, teaching and computer laboratories, faculty offices and research facilities, the university says in a news release.

The facility will address the need for more modern, functional laboratory teaching space, as well as space for research activities.

The areas the department vacates will provide added space for the university's School of Music.

Construction on the Academic Sciences Building is expected to continue through December 2023.
