The Platte County R-3 (Mo.) school district is constructing a new middle school in the northern section of Kansas City.

The school will serve about 500 to 600 students in sixth through eighth grade, reports The Platte County Landmark

The 93,000 square-foot facility will feature classrooms supported with an adjacent collaboration area that will foster hands-on and exploratory learning. Other features include a media center, full-sized gymnasium and commons, outdoor learning space, and flexible auditorium. Students will also have access to an outdoor track and field area.

Administrators say the building site is part of an 80-acre tract of land donated to the district by a developer as a potential site for a second district high school.

A new middle school new school will enable the district to convert Barry School, which now serves grades five to eight, to a K-5 elementary.

The school is set to open in 2023.
