Students at Johansen High School in Modesto, Calif., soon won't have to use a converted dance room and classroom in the gymnasium as a fitness area.

The Modesto City (Calif.) district, realizing that the dance room was crowded and unsafe, has begun construction of a $5.7 million fitness center, reports The Modesto Bee

The 7,300-square-foot facility will have a weight room, outdoor showers, an enclosed outdoor track, restrooms and pool equipment storage.

The center will enable hundreds more students to take weight training classes. The existing weight room can accommodate only 40 students,

The center is expected to be ready by the 2022-23 school year.
