The 55,000-square-foot facility will provide spaces for the business school and engineering school.

Construction is underway at the University of Washington Tacoma campus on a facility to classrooms and labs for multiple departments.

The three-story, 55,000-square-foot building will be called  Milgard Hall, and is slated to open in fall 2022, reports The Tacoma News Tribune

It will provide lab and classroom spaces for the Milgard School of Business and the School of Engineering and Technology.

The university says it needs additional space to accommodate increased student enrollment. About 5,400 students are enrolled at the university.

The building will be constructed using cross-laminated timber, often referred to as CLT, which is a wood panel product made by gluing together layers of lumber.

The construction method fits with Tacoma's history as the "Lumber Capital of the World."

The university secured $40 million from the state for the Milgard Hall project; an additional $10 million was raised by the university and private donors.

Anderson Construction is the construction manager and Architecture Research Office is the architect.
