Science and medical tower is under construction at the University of California San Diego

July 12, 2021
The seven-story La Jolla Innovation Center will house health and medical programs.

Construction of a $70 million, seven-story science and medical building will soon begin on the University of California San Diego campus in La Jolla, Calf.

The La Jolla Innovation Center will be nearly 100 feet tall and will house health and medical programs. It will have 110,00 square feet of office and educational space and a ground floor café.

The center will offer programs from UC San Diego Health, UC San Diego School of Medicine and UC San Diego Extension.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the university says one factor behind its need for fresh space is that many of the buildings it already uses on and off campus in the health and medical sciences require costly and disruptive seismic upgrades.

The University of California Board of Regents is buying the one-acre building site from GPI, a Los Angeles real estate investment and development firm, which will design, finance, build and maintain the tower.

Construction is scheduled to finish by fall 2023.
