Additions at two Portola Valley (Calif.) district schools promote outdoor learning

June 23, 2021
Both schools are receiving multiple outdoor spaces for students.

The Portola Valley (Calif.) elementary school district is remodeling and adding on to two of its campuses, Ormondale and Corte Madera.

Ormondale, which serves students from transitional kindergarten through third grade, will gain a new entry, courtyard and maker space patio, reports The Almanac. Students will have access to a sensory garden, including plants for play therapy, interactive play spaces, outdoor seating and a new greenhouse.

The main courtyard will be renovated to include spaces for outdoor and small group learning and raised beds for classroom gardens.

Corte Madera, which serves grades four through eight, will gain a new atrium, a new fourth- and fifth-grade classroom that looks out over the Frog Pond, an amphitheater, new landscaping and new lunch seating.

Four aging classroom buildings will be demolished and two new classroom will be built. The new classrooms will house art, maker space, science and general education.

Funding for the improvements comes from a $49.5 million bond proposal that voters approved in 2018.
