The Langley School in McLean, Va., has begun construction on a state-of-the-art building that will house pre-school, junior-kindergarten, kindergarten, fifth-grade and after-school programs.
The private elementary school will demolish an existing library building and begin construction on the Crossroads Building this summer on its 9.2 acre campus. The building is scheduled to open in 2022, reports Inside Nova.
The building is part of the school’s Next Generation Campaign to expand Langley’s programs and learning environment. With a goal of $20 million, it is the largest fund-raising campaign in Langley’s history.
Planners say the new building will enhance collaboration between different grade levels. It will have large light-filled spaces so students can be closely connected with the outdoors.
To achieve this, the hallways and classrooms will be flexible. Fifth-graders will be able to move freely within the building and gain independent skills. Classrooms will be infused with daylight so students can gain an understanding of outdoor learning.
The new building also will have a library/media center as well as a large multipurpose space.
Founded in 1942, The Langley School serves about 500 students from preschool through eighth grade.
The architect for the new building is Cox, Grae + Spack; the general contractor is Coakley Williams.
