Kent (Ohio) school district revamping high school, elementary school

May 31, 2021
Roosevelt High School is receiving new parking plans for safety; Walls Elementary School is adding two classrooms.

The Kent (Ohio) school district is planning a facilities upgrade at Theodore Roosevelt High School and Walls Elementary School.

Plans call for a new traffic and parking plan at the high school, a new field house at the stadium, a new competition gym at the high school and a two-classroom addition at Wall Elementary are among the updates for the schools, reports The Record-Courier

Kent Superintendent George Joseph said the upgrades are scheduled for next summer and are part of a $25 million plan to improve facilities.

The work on the next summer’s improvements will cost about $15 million to $16 million and be funded by a recently passed bond issue.

In addition, the district will spend about $8 million to $9 million this summer installing air conditioning at buildings that don’t have it, redesigning vestibules at several schools, installing turf at the high school football field and building an accessible ramp at Davey Elementary School.

Along with school repairs, the community felt it was important to improve on the school's traffic plan at the high school.

The new plan moves student parking closer to the building entrance.

The planned field house would be built at the south end of the stadium and include home and visitor lockers rooms, a concessions area, coaches offices, shower facilities and a trainer’s office, according to plans.
