New Athens, Ala., elementary school construction set to begin soon

May 17, 2021
The 600-student building will replace a school that has been torn down.

The Athens (Ala.) City school district is ready to begin construction of a $19 million replacement elementary school.

WAFF48 News reports that the new Athens Elementary will replace the former facility and have space for 600 students.

Demolition of the old school building began in 2019. Since then, Athens Elementary students have been attending classes in the former Athens Middle School building.

The district says plans for the new school call for:

  • 28 Classrooms
  • 1 Multi-needs Classrom
  • 1 Speech Classroom
  • 1 EL Classroom
  • 2 Title Classrooms

Assistant Superintendent Serena Owsley says most elementary schools in the district are at up to 85% capacity, and the new building will help accommodate enrollment growth.

Owlsey says construction of the building should be completed no later than two years from now.
