Massachusetts Catholic school begins construction on gym named for rower killed in crash

May 7, 2021
The facility will honor former student and rower Grace Rett, who was killed last year in a car crash.

Our Lady Of the Valley Regional School in Uxbridge, Mass. is building a $3.8 million sports complex.

The complex will be named G.R.A.C.E. for former student Grace Rett, who died last year, reports CBS4 Boston.

Rett, who was on the rowing team at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., was killed in a crash in January 2020 while on a team training trip in Vero Beach, Fla.

G.R.A.C.E. stands for “Grace Rett Athletic Complex And Education Center."

“Having Grace’s name on this building would of course thrilled her, honor her, and humble her to no end,” said Mary Jo Rett, Grace’s mother.

The 7,500-square-foot facility will have a basketball court, a pair of indoor classrooms and green space for outdoor classes.

The cost of the facility has been covered partly by a fundraising campaign called "Grace to the Finish" in honor of Rett’s world record--62 hours and 3 seconds of continuous indoor rowing.
