The University of California, Riverside, has won approval of construction plans for the School of Medicine’s $84‐million Education Building II.
The university says the Board of Regents has voted to approve plans for the facility, which will be built immediately south of the School of Medicine's existing education building and east of Boyce Hall. It will have about 57,000 assignable square feet within 90,000 gross square feet.
The design will have an urban downtown theme that includes outdoor seating, terraces, and landscaping that will complement the existing buildings around it.
A large outdoor plaza will unify and define a new School of Medicine precinct on campus.
In pursuit of LEED Platinum certification, the university will incorporate many environmentally sensitive building systems into the design. Extensive use of solar panels and advanced mechanical systems design, along with thermally insulating materials, will minimize energy consumption.
The project is scheduled to break ground in early summer 2021.
The architect is Hensel Phelps + CO Architects.
