North Carolina college plans building to house communications and sports science programs

March 30, 2021
Meredith College in Raleigh had postponed work last year on the 13,000-square-foot facility because of the coronavirus.

Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C., says it plans to begin construction on a new academic building that will house its communication and exercise and sports science programs.

Work on the building project was paused in 2020 because of the Covid-19  pandemic.

The new academic facility will be constructed near the Weatherspoon Gymnasium/Lowery Fitness Center, on the northwestern side of the College’s 225-acre campus.

Construction on the new building is expected to be completed during the 2021-22 academic year.

The approximately 13,000-square-foot building will include specialized spaces such as an agency-style classroom, a media studio, editing rooms, a human performance lab, an assessment lab, a conference room, and common areas.

The new building will replace Weatherspoon Annex and will provide cutting-edge instructional space for Meredith’s communication and exercise and sports science programs. Since 2011, enrollment in the undergraduate communication and exercise and sports science programs has increased by 29% and 52% respectively.

The construction project will also free up space in Harris Building so that Meredith’s hospitality management program can be housed with the School of Business.

The architect is Design Development Architects, and the general contractor is Inland Construction.
