A suburban Chicago school for students with special needs is planning a major expansion and renovation of its campus.
The Chicago Tribune reports that the Morton Grove, Ill., Plan Commission has recommended approval of a special-use permit for construction of a two-story addition at the Julia S. Molloy Education Center. The school serves students in Niles Township, which includes all or portions of Skokie, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Golf and Niles.
The addition will house a new, larger gym on the first floor; administrative offices and training and conference rooms for staff will be on the second floor.
The existing building will be expanded to the west and east and reconfigured to create larger classrooms and improve spaces for support staff.
The purpose of the improvements is not to increase student enrollment or the number of staff working in the school, McGrath told the Morton Grove Plan Commission.
Molloy Education Center is operated by the Niles Township District for Special Education. It was built in 1969; an addition was built in 1998.
The campus has an enrollment of about 110 K-12 students with special needs and disabilities who require services that cannot be provided within their home school district.
The architect is Tria Architecture.
