New middle school ready to open in Grape Creek (Texas) district

Nov. 1, 2019
Students will begin classes Monday in the new Grape Creek Middle School in San Angelo, Texas.

The Grape Creek (Texas) district has unveiled its newly constructed middle school campus.

The San Angelo Standard Times reports that students and district officials gathered Thursday morning to cut the ribbon on Grape Creek Middle School in San Angelo.

Classes are scheduled to begin in the new facility on Monday.

For Superintendent Angie Smetana, the day marked the celebration of reaching a goal that took years attaining.

"This dream started in 2001," Smetana says. "I was so excited ... what I've been waiting for was to watch (my students) walk in for the first time. Now I'm good."

The new middle school sits adjacent to Grape Creek High School. Before getting their own campus, middle school students shared a building with the district’s elementary school.

The new construction and renovation projects were made possible by a May 2018 bond referendum. Construction is set to begin soon on renovation of the elementary school.

"We overcame all types of obstacles, but with the help of the community passing the bond election...and our government leaders and the parents, we were able to make this come true," Smetana says

The school's classrooms did not yet have desks and chairs Thursday, and the school library was devoid of books, but that will change over the weekend.

"We're loading buses and trailers, and our students have requested that they help with moving everything here," Smetana says. "We're going to have what we call 'the great move.'"

"We'll be up and running with a normal school day on Monday."
