Marquette University has unveiled the first phase of its $24 million Athletic and Human Performance Research Center on its Milwaukee campus.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the 46,000-square-foot facility includes space for interdisciplinary athletic and human performance research, locker space for 90-plus athletes on the lacrosse and golf teams, and strength and conditioning spaces.
The university says the project places under one roof "cutting-edge research in elite athletic performance, human performance, rehabilitation, fitness data analytics and other related disciplines, along with a world-class strength and conditioning area."
Equipment built into the strength and conditioning area will enable researchers to take measurements on site, like a "living lab of its own," says Lora Strigens, Marquette's vice president for planning and facilities management.
Pilot research projects include analyzing the best ways to recover leg function after a stroke, what works in helping athletes recover from concussions and how to help student athletes avoid injuries.
"What's unique about (the facility) is the sharing of the space ... rather than being in silos," Strigens says.
