College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine, plans to start construction this spring on a $13 million, energy-efficient building that will house science laboratories, lecture halls, faculty offices, art and design studios, and a teaching greenhouse.
The Bangor Daily News reports that construction of the two-story, 29,000-square-foot Center for Human Ecology is expected to be completed by September 2020.
The college says the facility will be built to exacting energy standards and will consume 80 percent less energy than a comparable building with more traditional construction designs and materials, The college, founded in 1969, emphasizes environmental sustainability.
The project will be the first new academic building constructed at the college since the 1980s, when it had fewer than 200 students. Today, the college’s student population is capped at about 350.
“The Center will embody our interdisciplinary mission, gathering sciences, arts, and humanities under one roof and inspiring engaged exploration for generations to come,” says college President Darron Collins.
The architects for the project are Susan T. Rodriguez and GO Logic.
