Southwestern College in Chula Vista, Calif., has broken ground on a performing arts center and police station—two projects that cost a total of almost $70 million.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the $52.7 million center will include a 500-seat theater, classrooms and a 151-seat black box theater. It is being constructed on the northeastern part of the college's man campus, next to the new Wellness and Aquatics Complex that opened earlier this year.
The college says the performing arts center will accommodate community public events and cultural engagements as well as school activities.
It is designed to have 48,576 square feet of gross floor area, and will have dance instruction and performance space; a performing arts classroom; audience support; and a stagecraft/prop construction area.
The project has been designed with a goal of achieving LEED Silver certification.
Across campus, a new $6.8 million college police station will house an armory, security monitoring systems, dispatch center, meeting rooms and parking for police vehicles.
Funding for projects come from a $389 million bond measure voters approved in 2008 and a $400 million bond measure approved in 2016.
The architect for the projects is Tucker Sadler Architects.
