The Fulton County (Ga.) school board has awarded a $57.8 million contract for construction of a STEM-themed high school in Alpharetta.
The school, which has not yet been named, will be built on the former site of Milton High School.
The construction contract was awarded to Barton Malow.
The old Milton High closed in 2005 when a new Milton High was built in Milton. The old campus housed an alternative high school for several years; that program has been relocated to clear the way for construction.
Demolition of the old Milton campus began earlier this year, and construction of the new school is scheduled to begin in July. The district expects to open the high school in 2020.
The district is planning for the school to have an integrated curriculum, a focus on technology and health science, and an emphasis on design thinking. Partnerships with STEM-focused corporations also will contribute to students' learning experience.
The school is scheduled to open with an incoming class of 400 freshmen and will grow to a total capacity of 1,500 students as new grade levels are added in succeeding years.
Money to build the school comes from the one-cent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax earmarked for school capital improvements.
