Construction is set to begin later this month on Polaris Tech, a new charter school scheduled to open this summer in Ridgeland, S.C.
Bluffton Today reports that the first phase is expected to be about 28,000 square feet on land formerly occupied by Ridgeland Hospital.
“Before construction starts, the remnants of the old hospital will be demolished and the site will be cleared,” Polaris spokesman John Williams says. “We will schedule a ceremonial groundbreaking in mid-January and full construction will be underway in January.”
The school is expected to start classes in August.
Polaris Tech’s will place academic emphasis on six career areas: aerospace, health science, information technology, logistics, advanced manufacturing and business management.
It will serve up to 250 students in grades six to 10 and add one high school grade each year until it serves the span of middle to high school.
“As a state charter school, Polaris Tech is open to any student in South Carolina, but organizers expect most students to come from Jasper and Beaufort counties,” Williams says.
