The Lee County (Fla.) School District has broken ground on a new high school in Bonita Springs.
The Naples Herald reports that Bonita Springs High School will accommodate 1,600 students when the campus opens in August 2018.
“This school will pioneer new programs like sustainable agriculture, aerospace technology, environmental controls. All areas in great need of highly qualified graduates,” Lee County Superintendent Gregory Adkins says.
The new school will offer a collegiate academy program in partnership with Florida Gulf Coast University.
“Florida Gulf Coast University has been an incredible partner to the school district and has established the first-ever FGCU collegiate academy,” says Adkins. “There our students will be able to explore majors they are interested in while earning college credit right here at Bonita Springs High School.”
The school was originally slated for a capacity of about 2,000 students but because construction was $14.9 million over budget, the capacity was trimmed by 400 seats.
Bonita Springs’ first students will begin class in a portable campus later this year at Estero High School before moving to the new building in August 2018.
