The University of North Texas in Denton is building a 128,354 square-foot addition to the facility housing the College of Visual Arts and Design.
The university says the project will enable the college to house many more of its programs in one location.
The additional space will include an 18,959-square-foot multipurpose courtyard, with landscaping and seating; a 2,267-square-foot rooftop dye garden, supplying plant dyes to the fibers department; a new gallery with extensive back-of-house research and study space; and 181 spaces for educational programs.
“This project will unite innovation with tradition and further establish that UNT has one of best art schools in the nation,” says Greg Watts, dean of the college.
The original main Art Building, with 82,546 square feet of space, was constructed in the early 1970s. departments and programs are currently spread over numerous buildings across campus.
The $70 million project is expected to be completed by fall 2018. The addition is being designed and constructed to receive LEED silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The architects are Corgan and Machado-Silvetti. The builder is AECOM Hunt.
