The timeline for several schools to be built in the Houston school district has been pushed back, district officials say.

KTRK-TV reports that more than a half-dozen schools in various stages of design or construction will open later than called for in the original schedule.

"Typically they will slip three to six months but shouldn't slip farther than that," says Dan Bankhead, the general manager-design for the Houston district's construction services department.

Among the schools affected: Eastwood Academy, Lamar, and Yates high schools, the High School for Law & Justice and Northside, formerly known as Jefferson Davis High School. Also on the list of possible delays include Lawson Middle School -- formerly Dowling -- Parker Elementary School, as well as Yates and Bellaire high schools.

Bellaire High appears to have the biggest delay issues. Original plans had it opening this week. In revamped plans, construction is not due to begin until 2017.

The projects are part of the Houston district's $2 billion bond program, which calls for construction or renovation of 40 schools
