Gwinnett County (Ga.) district opens flagship STEAM-themed middle school
The Gwinnett County (Ga.) district has opened a new middle school in Duluth that it has labeled the district's flagship STEAM school.
Fox 5 Atlanta reports that students in grades six through eight arrived Monday at Coleman Middle School for their first day. The curriculum will focus on STEAM—science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.
It includes programs such as the first dance studio in a Gwinnett middle school and a music technology lab, in which students will be able to compose and produce their own songs.
Coleman Middle, built on the site of a former elementary school, is one of two campuses opening Monday for the first time. The other is Baldwin Elementary in Norcross, Ga.
With the addition of the new schools, Gwinnett County now has 139 educational facilities: 80 elementary schools, 29 middle schools, 21 high schools, and nine other educational facilities. The district expects its enrollment in 2016-17 to increase by about 1,800 students, to nearly 178,000 students.
