Wake County (N.C.) district breaks ground on elementary school

Bryan Road Elementary in Garner, N.C., initially will serve as swing space while a nearby campus is rebuilt.

The Wake County (N.C.) district has broken ground on a 800-student elementary school in Garner.

The steadily growing school system plans to open Bryan Road Elementary School in August 2017. The$30 million, 109,432-square-foot, three-story facility will provide classroom space for students from prekindergarten through fifth grade

When the new campus is completed, it will serve as a temporary home to students now attending Vandora Springs Elementary School in Garner, The Raleigh News & Observer says.

Wake County will use Bryan Road as a swing space for 2017-18 while Vandora Springs Elementary is demolished and reconstructed.

The project almost didn’t happen because Garner Town Council members and representatives from the school district couldn't agree on a special use permit to build Bryan Road Elementary.

Town officials wanted the district to pay for paving Bryan Road, which now is a gravel road. School officials said they didn’t have the money to do so. After a couple of months of negotiations, the two sides reached a compromise

The architect for Bryan Road Elementary is Clark Nexsen Architects, and the builder is New Atlantic Contracting.
