The Nassau County (Fla.) district has broken ground on an 800-student elementary school.
WJAX-TV reports that Wildlight Elementary School is set to open in 2017 to students in kindergarten to 5th grade. The new campus will address rapid growth in the county, which is situated along the Atlantic Ocean north of Jacksonville.
The population in Nassau County has grown from 44,000 in 1990 to about 76,000 in 2015; from 2013 to 2014, the county issued 6,703 housing permits, compared with 3,909 form 2009 to 2010.
Student enrollment in the Nassau County district is about 11,000.
Construction of Wildlight Elementary will cost about $23 million. The district plans for the school curriculum to focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
