Hawaii breaks ground on new high school in Maui
The state of Hawaii has broken ground on Kihei High School in South Maui. Project architects say they are aiming to build a campus that is the first net-zero-energy school in the state.
KHON-TV reports that the campus will have 215,000 square feet of space and will accommodate 1,650 students in grades nine to 12.
State Rep. Kaniela Ing says the community has been waiting since the 1990s for the school to be built. It is projected to open as soon as 2018 if the state legislature provides the necessary funding.
Lawmakers have appropriated $30 million for the first construction phase; another $50 million to $100 million will be needed to complete the campus.
