Construction has begun on a new elementary school in Spring City, Pa.
The Owen J. Roberts School District, based in Pottstown, Pa., has broken ground on a new East Vincent Elementary building, which will replace the aging facility, which was built in 1953.
The Reading Eagle reports that the $27 million project is expected to be completed in 2017 and will result in a school with a capacity of 650 students.
The 85,800-square-foot building will be be constructed behind the existing school, the district says. Students will continue to attend classes in the existing building while construction proceeds. The school will be constructed as a non-combustible structure with steel frame and masonry shell. The facility will be fully sprinklered with efficient HVAC systems.
When construction is finished, the existing East Vincent building will be torn down.
The Owen J. Roberts district also is preparing to build another elementary school in Pottstown to replace the existing East Coventry building.
"Both have aging heating systems and lack air conditioning," the district says "Neither school has available large group instructional spaces or the technology infrastructure necessary to sustain the demands of today’s digital world."
