Bond Commission approves $5 million for new Sandy Hook elementary school

This project is a necessary part of the recovery process, said Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy (D) and the state Bond Commission met this week to vote on funding for a new Sandy Hook Elementary School, FoxCT reported.

The commission, which met for the first time since July, approved a $5 million grant for the Town of Newtown to finance ongoing planning and design costs for a new Sandy Hook Elementary School.

This project is a necessary part of the recovery process, according to Malloy.

Construction of the 86,000 square feet school is now underway. Designers indicate that they want the school to feel safe without making the 500 students who will attend the school feel like they are in jail. The site of the tragedy will be preserved.

The new school is slated to be ready for students in the fall of 2016.
