Danville (Ill.) district will close elementary because of substandard conditions
The Danville (Ill.) district is closing Garfield Elementary School in June because of significant facility deficiencies.
The school has had to deal with sewer and mold and problems, and repairs would be too expensive, reports The Commercial-News.
The closing will affect about 200 students in kindergarten through fourth grade. They will be relocated to Liberty and Meade Park elementary schools. Those campuses have sufficient space to absorb the students from Garfield.
District officials say replacing windows, plumbing and HVAC systems, and carrying out upgrades to comply with building codes would cost an estimated $13 million.
