Yonkers (N.Y.) district will build a preK-8 school at former Catholic school site
The Yonkers (N.Y.) district is constructing its first new school since 2000 that will be a pre-k through eighth grade school.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor Community School will rise on the site of the former St. Denis Catholic School and serve about 675 students, the district says in a news release.
The Justice School will feature multifunctional spaces that will be accessible evenings and weekends without the need to open the entire school building. Special amenities include a multipurpose gymnasium and meeting room with stage; a full-sized basketball court and locker rooms; a cafeteria and meeting room with full kitchen; and a health suite with space for two exam rooms and a dental exam room.
The facility will have photovoltaic solar panels, green roofs, high-efficiency electric heat pumps, extensive daylighting with sunshades, low-water-use plumbing fixtures, fresh air ventilation with MERV 13 filtration, LED light fixtures, recycled content in materials and low-VOC interior finishes and furnishings.
The city will bond $75 million to build the school, and the state will pay 75% of certain costs.
The school is expected to open in 2023.
