Former HBCU in Detroit will reopen under new name

Michigan's governor has signed legislation to re-establish Detroit’s former HBCU, the Lewis College of Business, as the Pensole Lewis College of Business and Design.

What was Michigan's only historically Black college or university--The former Lewis College of Business in Detroit--will reopen as the Pensole Lewis College of Business and Design.

The Lewis College of Business was founded in 1928 by Violet T. Lewis in Indianapolis, Ind., as a secretarial school for Black women. The college relocated to Detroit in 1939, and closed in 2013, reports MLive.com.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has signed legislation to re-establish the school as the Pensole Lewis College of Business and Design

Pensole Lewis College of Business and Design will offer free tuition and programs for Black creatives, designers, engineers, business leaders and more.

Among the college’s founding partners are the College for Creative Studies (CCS) in Detroit, retailer Target and the Gilbert Family Foundation.

The school is expected to open in 2022 on the campus of the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.
