Avenues: The World School, a for-profit private school with students from wealthy families, is planning a Silicon Valley campus with its purchase of an office building in San Jose, Calif.
The San Jose Mercury News reports that New York City-based school, acting through an affiliate, paid $27.1 million cash for a 77,000-square-foot, three-story office building, according to Santa Clara County records. The school intends to open Avenues Silicon Valley and offer programs for children aged 2 through 18.
“We are excited about the recent progress toward making Avenues Silicon Valley a reality,” says Tara Powers, a spokeswoman for Avenues The World School.
The school’s first campus opened in 2012 in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. The school's website also lists campuses in China and Brazil, as well as a digital offering called Avenues Online.
“We have completed the purchase of 550 Meridian Ave. and will immediately begin working with the community and city of San Jose on approvals to open the doors of the campus to students and families,” Powers says.
Yearly tuition at the school is roughly $56,000 for the 2019-2020 academic year, according to The Avenues website.
In New York City, the parents of the students include tech executives, startup entrepreneurs, investment tycoons and fashion designers, as well as celebrity Katie Holmes. The school will be situated in one of the two newest office buildings in the Meridian@280 campus. The building three stories tall and contain 77,000 square feet of space.
“Our aim is to open a full campus in 2021 serving students ages 2 to 18,” Powers says.
