The Port Townsend (Wash.) district has broken ground on a $28 million elementary school.
The Port Townsend Leader reports that Salish Coast Elementary School will replace the aging Grant Street Elementary building, which opened in 1956. The Grant Street school has about 300 students in grades preK to 3 and has seven portable classrooms in addition to the main building.
Salish Coast will be built on a site just west of the Grant Street school and is scheduled to open in 2018.
The new school will be almost double the size of the existing elementary—68,000 square feet at Salish Coast compared with 35,000 square feet at Grant Street Elementary. It will have capacity for 600 students; when the new school opens, fourth- and fifth-grade students will be moved there from Blue Middle Heron School.
The architect is Integrus Architecture, and the builder is Absher Construction.
