Massachusetts to fund school and university life sciences initiatives

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) announced that grants will be made available to area schools to support life-sciences related capital projects as a part of a statewide initiative.

The grants will be part of 10-year, $1-billion investment by the state to create jobs and establish health and well-being initiatives and will be available to schools located in the MetroWest region of Massachusetts, according to a press release from MLSC.  Among the schools already slated to receive grants are Framingham State University and MassBay Community College.

Framingham State will get a $3 million grant to fund a major lab renovation. MassBay Community College will receive a $50,000 grant to plan an Applied Life Sciences and Technology Center that will be located in its downtown Framingham campus. The $22.1 million project is currently in its design phase.

Three MetroWest-area high schools also received equipment and supply grants in December as part of the initiative. Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School received a grant for $40,000, Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School received a grant for $100,000 and Waltham High School received a grant for $100,000.
