Plans in Stamford, Connecticut, for new Roxbury School building and the demolition of the existing school are moving forward.

The Stamford Advocate reports that the city's Planning Board has approved plans for the new school construction as part of the process to acquire state funding.

Preliminary work is set to begin in July 2026. The first phase would be the construction of geothermal wells at the site.

The Roxbury School, built 70 years ago, is in poor condition and in constant need of short-term repairs, according to school officials.

Portions of the existing building, including some portable structures and four classrooms, will have to be demolished before work on the new structure could commence.

Major construction is scheduled to begin in November 2026 and wrap up in 2028.

The Roxbury School now educates students from kindergarten through fifth grade; the new school will offer instruction through eighth grade. The school capacity will increase to 850 students from 500.

The project is expected to cost $130 million. State funding will cover $78 million of that sum.
