Active Minds Inc., with student-run chapters on 65 college campuses, is a nonprofit organization devoted to increasing awareness of mental illness. It was started by Alison Malmon after the 2000 suicide of her brother Brian, who was on leave from Columbia University. Malmon says she is concerned about a resurgence of the stigma against mental illness because of the Virginia Tech tragedy.
