San Francisco can't afford to pay its share, must decline $50 million e-rate grant

April 2, 2001
Officials say the school district's budget woes are so severe that it cannot come up with the required match of 17 cents per federal dollar.

Last year, San Francisco Unified applied for and received a $50 million e-rate grant to bring thousands of new computers and phone systems into the classrooms and libraries of 46 of the city's neediest schools. Eight months later, the district has given up on accepting the grant because it can't afford the $7 million to $9 million it would have to pay.
