Chesapeake Public Schools names Doug Brubaker as superintendent

Chesapeake Public Schools in Virginia recently announced that it has selected Doug Brubaker as its next superintendent. The Chesapeake School Board announced that Brubaker will begin leading the district on Aug. 13, and will be succeeding Jared A. Cotton, who is retiring after serving eight years as Chesapeake’s superintendent and 34 years in public education.
Brubaker is currently superintendent of Texarkana Independent School District in Texas. He has 31 years of experience in education as a teacher, principal, and district leader, and has worked in school systems ranging from 7,000 to 57,000 students.
The superintendent search included a national search led with assistance from the Virginia School Boards Association, a community feedback survey, and an opportunity for public comment, according to the district.
School Board Chairman Kim Scott said in an official announcement about Baker's hiring:
“After an extensive national search with assistance from the Virginia School Boards Association, the Board is proud to welcome Dr. Doug Brubaker as the next Superintendent of Chesapeake Public Schools. Dr. Brubaker brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to this role. His proven record of improving student outcomes, engaging families and communities, and leading complex organizations made him an outstanding choice to build upon the strong foundation already established in Chesapeake.”
Brubaker holds a doctorate from the University of North Texas, a master’s degree in elementary education from Texas Christian University, and a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Kansas. He also holds Texas Superintendent Certification and a Virginia Division Superintendent license.
In Texarkana, Brubaker led efforts tied to academic improvement, expansion of associate-degree attainment among high school graduates, and growth of the district’s virtual academy program. He also helped pass a $189 million levy for projects that included safety and security upgrades, a new pre-K center, a college and career readiness prep elementary school, and a new high school career and technology center.
Chesapeake Public Schools serves more than 40,000 students.
