As of Aug. 1, the University of New Orleans will become tobacco-free in order to comply with state law. The law, which was passed last year, requires that public colleges and universities develop smoke-free policies for their campuses by August 2014, according to the Times-Picayune.
Under the law, Act No. 211, campuses are to be smoke free, but UNO has decided to go tobacco-free and will prohibit the use of products derived from or containing tobacco, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes and chewing tobacco. The policy applies to the entire university population, including students, faculty, staff, contractors and visitors.
