NY Education Commissioner urges schools to drop American Indian mascots, team names

New York's education commissioner is asking local school districts to stop using American Indian mascots and team names. Richard P. Mills says Indian mascots and symbols "can make the school environment seem less safe and supportive to some children, and may send an inappropriate message to children about what is or is not respectful behavior toward others."
