Palm Beach County school leaders are largely ignoring a mandate to build smaller schools, hoping the law will go away. The county's typical elementary school is built for more than 950 students, middle schools for 1,300 and high schools for 2,500. But last year, the Legislature passed a law limiting elementary schools to 500 students, middle schools to 700 and high schools to 900. The law takes effect in 2003.
