As enrollment falls and finances tighten, the Shawnee Mission District hopes to cut costs by closing three small elementary schools at the school year's end. But voters can reject the plan. Under a Kansas law that applies only to Shawnee Mission, voters in the areas surrounding the three Overland Park schools have forced a referendum on the closings.
