University of Kentucky ponders whether it will save administration building heavily damaged by fire

The Administration Building of the University of Kentucky in Lexington was heavily damaged in a fire, but its walls are intact and restoration is possible. University and construction officials have begun assessing the loss. The building's roof and third floor were destroyed, and most of the second floor and all of the first floor and basement suffered smoke and water damage....University of Kentucky officials acknowledge that a sprinkler system at the UK Administration Building might have slowed the destructive blaze, but they say the lack of one was part of a deliberate facilities plan that puts student safety first. UK Fire Marshall Gary Beach says the building was on the list to be sprinkled, but had not yet been done because UK is installing systems for student housing first. More than half of all student dormitories, fraternity and sorority houses have been outfitted with sprinkler systems.
