Neighbors, civil rights group in Evanston, Ill., object to new school district administration building

A group of Evanston homeowners has the support of the local NAACP in opposing a move to construct a school district building and parking lot on what is now a grassy field in their neighborhood. The Evanston City Council has voted to move ahead with plans to build a $14.8 million administrative building and early childhood center. The move raised the hackles of longtime residents in the black community, some of whom charge that plans for the building are racist. They say the district selected the site knowing that people who live there do not have the financial means to fight the decision.
