Senate, White House agree on education bill

Senate Democrats and Republicans said yesterday that they had reached a tentative agreement with the White House on a far-reaching education bill. Negotiators were were still working out financing levels. The bill would give state and local school officials new leeway in setting classroom policy while holding them accountable for results.
