Student housing under construction near University of Alabama Birmingham

Jan. 9, 2019
Private developer is constructing a 17-story mixed-used building that will have space for 522 students.

Construction has begun on a 17-story, mixed-use student housing development on the edge of the University of Alabama Birmingham campus.

The Opus Group says in a news release that the building will have 199 residential units that will provide living space for 522 students.

The housing units will range from junior studios to four bedrooms. Shared amenities in the building will include secure parking, a fitness center, spa, study rooms and lounges, and an outdoor amenity deck with fitness areas, fire pits and group seating.

The 17th floor will feature panoramic views of Birmingham; a coffee bar; a club room with pool tables, ping pong tables and large screen TVs; a rooftop pool and grilling stations.

The project is scheduled for completion in fall 2020.

The building is being constructed near downtown Birmingham in the Five Points South neighborhood on the site of a former pool hall.

Ben Angelo, senior director of real estate development for the Opus Development Company, describes the location as an easy, walkable distance to the UAB campus and close to many retail, dining and entertainment options in the neighborhood.

The project is a joint venture partnership between the Opus Group and The McKinney Fund.

The architect is Myefski Architects, and the contractor is Rabren General Contractors.
